John W. Brown et al. vs. George Hobson, 1849-1853.

Summons, testimony and arguments from a court case involving James M. Howard, captain and part owner of the Ship Mentor, and his co-owners. The ship sailed for San Francisco in 1849. George Hobson was executor of Howard's estate after Howard's death. Evidently Howard never kept a complete account of the ship's expenses and profits from sales and refused to share what he did record with the co-owners before his death. Hobson continued to refuse to make the account available, thus forcing the co-owners to take Howard's estate to court. There are a number of notes describing how certain amounts of brandy were or were not sold from the vessel, depending on the witness. Of particular note is a list of passengers divided into those in steerage and those in cabins.
